The Castle and the City Walls or St. Ann is situated on the hill 70m over the sea in the city centre. Today it is also called St. Michael Fort – saint patron of the city. Apart of the centre, there are two more fortifications on the mainland: St. John (Tanaja), which is the highest one, and Šubićevac (Barona).

At the mouth of 2700 meters long and 120-300m wide St. Antes Channel there is one of the strongest sea fortresses on the Croatian side of the Adriatic in general: St. Nicholas' Fortress. It has a shape of a keyhole and stands directly in the sea with many secrets ways just above sea-level. Instead of being used for defence, it is nowdays adjusted to a concert venue due its extraordinary acoustics. Sailing in twilight in order to listen to music in one of the old fortresses of the city is a special experience.

Kornati National Park

Croatians have a legend that when God had finished creating the world he found he had a small collection of white rocks left. He casually tossed them into the water off the coast of Dalmatia, and when he looked again he found he had created perfection in the form of Kornati Islands.

«On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown His work and thus created Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath» , recorded Georg Bernard Show.

The Kornati group consists of almost 150 separate tracts of land scattered over 230sq km (89miles) of sea. National Park protects reefs and waters as well as the islands: in fact 75 per cent of the protected area is water.
There are no rivers or streams on the Kornati; it is pure Karst substrate that is cut by fissures and intented by caves and grottoes. The white limestone lying under the coastal shallows is what gives the water their heavently blue colour.
The cliffs in the southwest, which are up to 80m (262ft in height) are the heighest coastal features along the Croatian Adriatic. Kornat is easly the largest island, and it gives its name to the whole group. It is 25km (16 miles) in length, but very narrow, and measures just over 32sq km (12sq miles) in total.
Kornati are a sailor's paradise, replete with innumerable quiet coves. The only marina is at Piškera. It has 120 berths.
